Join us as we welcome NAACP Image Award nominee, Dolen Perkins-Valdez to the third installment of the MahoganyBooks Reading Series. Dolen will read from, discuss, and sign her highly acclaimed debut novel, Wench.

Wench is a novel that explores the complex relationships between slave masters and their enslaved mistresses. Set at the historic Tawawa House in Ohio, Dolen provides us with a story of four women whose friendship is forged by pain, yet sustained by their love for their children and the hope of freedom. We are excited to feature this award winning novel, Wench, and it’s captivating author, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, during Women’s History Month in recognition of the 2011 theme, Our History is Our Strength.

We encourage you all to join us on Friday, March 11th at 7pm for this FREE event. It will be held at Betty’s Place & Cafe in the PG Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Rd. Landover, MD. Books will be provided on site by MahoganyBooks, however can also be purchased in advance at a discounted price from MahoganyBooks.com.

Attendees must present their MahoganyBooks receipt to collect a ticket prior to getting their book autographed. Your ticket will also enter you to win a prize during the drawing to be held at the conclusion of the event.

About Dolen:
Dolen Perkins-Valdez’s fiction and essays have appeared in StoryQuarterly, Robert Olen Butler Prize Stories 2009, The Kenyon Review, PMS: PoemMemoirStory, North Carolina Literary Review, and Richard Wright Newsletter. Born and raised in Memphis, a graduate of Harvard, and a former University of California postdoctoral fellow, Perkins-Valdez lives in Washington, DC. This is her first novel.

Black Books Weekend Bookclub Rebroadcast


Black Books Weekend opened Black Friday, November 26, 2010 with live readings and live Twitter/Facebook chats with 80+ of the most talented writers on the shelves, from all genres.
This was one of our best bookclub appreciation weekends yet!  We showcased several bookclubs at Black Pearls Magazine for the December, Christmas/Holiday Edition. Check out all the bookclubs, here.

Summary of the Weekend Events:  We had exactly 747 live callers, a total of 397 chatroom guests and visitors and a total of 19,781 RSS feed downloads of the shows as of Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010. Workshops: Empowering Single Mothers Raising Male Children Alone

EMPOWERING SINGLE MOTHERS RAISING MALE CHILDREN

Raising Him Alone Workshops for Single Mothers Kick-Off Philadelphia, PA


The Urban Leadership Institute, Residential After-School Program and the Institute for Interactive Instruction are pleased to announce the Raising Him Alone Campaign (RHAC). The campaign seeks to create a larger community dialogue around the importance of supporting single mothers who are raising boys. With generous funding from the Open Society Institute’s Campaign for Black Male Achievement the Raising Him Alone Campaign has created a national platform to support single mothers raising boys in some of the toughest communities throughout this country.

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010 the campaign kicks off the first of many workshops to be held in Philadelphia, PA and will continue through June 2011. The campaign has partnered with a host of recognized organizations in the area to help mobilize mothers who are raising sons. BAEO- Philadelphia, Black Male Development Symposium and The Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color are just a few of the campaign’s strategic partners who are support our work to improve the social and academic outcomes among boys of color.

Raising Him Alone (RHA) is dedicated to researching, designing, and implementing a campaign to support the social well being of single mothers raising boys. Through a series of intense community forums, workshops and support group initiatives, RHA seeks to increase access to resources in the areas of Health & Well Being (Mental Health), Educational Support & Advocacy, as well as Financial Literacy.


About The Raising Him Alone Campaign
The Raising Him Alone Campaign is the vision of David Miller and Matt Stevens. It is based on Miller and Stevens' collective work to improve the life chances of African American males. Miller and Stevens were compelled to join forces to create an advocacy campaign that focused specifically on supporting single mothers raising boys.

The campaign is based on numerous conversations with local and national organizations on ways to better support African American boys. Additionally, Miller & Stevens hosted a series of focus groups and interviews with single mothers raising boys across the U.S. to determine the successes and challenges which confront these families. Overwhelmingly, mothers indicated issues related to understanding male development, issues with their sons father's and financial constraints as major challenges in their lives.

The campaign acknowledges that nationwide several groups are doing an exceptional job working with African American boys from an academic and social developmental standpoint, however few organizations are working with the parents of these boys.

The Raising Him Alone Campaign recognizes that there has been a total disregard for the voices of single mothers living in urban communities. Such neglect of mothers raising boys has created some alarming trends among African American boys. To this end, the campaign believes that by increasing awareness around the need to connect single mothers to greater access to services (mental health, financial literacy, strategies for parenting a male child and strategies to support school achievement of male children) we can produce more positive outcomes for African American boys.

Event Description: Presented in partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Bookfest features author readings, publishing workshops, poetry performances, children's storytelling, teen programs, and over 75 vendors. Free books to the first 1,000 people.

The authors talks include discussions with Nelson George, Tim Reid, Liza Mundy (Michelle Obama: Biography), Sonya Sones, Marita Golden, Lori Nelson, Ronald Cotton (Picking Cotton), Chef Gillian Clark, Sahar Simmons, Le Hinton, Victoria Christopher Murray, W. Ralph Eubanks, Lucille Clifton, Omar Tyree, Kimberly Seals Allers (The Mocha Moms Manual), Charisse Nunes (I am Barack Obama children’s book), and several teen authors.

This year, in response to President Barack Obama’s call to service, the Capital BookFest and the Prince George’s County Department of Social Services will team up to promote healthy homes for children in foster care. Kwame Alexander, a poet, publisher, playwright, producer, dynamic speaker, and performer, is the author of eight books -including the best-selling Do The Write Thing: 7 Steps to Publishing Success, Kupenda: Love Poems, Dancing Naked on the Floor: poems and essays, and The Way I Walk, a collection of young adult short stories.

He has conducted standing-room only publishing workshops, delivered awe-inspiring keynote speeches, and performed his cutting-edge brand of poetry to audiences at numerous conferences, colleges and venues throughout the world, including: Stratford-on-Avon, Brixton Town Hall, Oberlin College, UC Berkeley, Hampton University, Duke University, University of Maryland, America's Choice National Conference, Baltimore Writers Alliance, and the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Conference.

Alexander has produced over two-hundred literary related special events, the most recent being the First Annual Capital BookFest, a major literary arts festival sponsored by The Washington Post, Chick-fil-A, and The Literacy Council of Prince George's County. Dubbed a "phenom" in the poetry world by The Charleston (SC) City Paper, Alexander has wowed audiences with his electric readings and performances at coffeehouses, theatres, and universities across the country and abroad. In 2002, 2004, and 2005 Alexander was selected as a special guest author for the Library of Congress Poets at Noon Series, and The Washington Post-Maryland Center for the Book Evening in The Stacks Gala.

The founder of two book publishing companies, BlackWords Press and Do The Write Thing , this publishing veteran of over fifteen years is responsible for some of the most progressive, original and exciting fiction and non-fiction on the shelves today. He has published over forty authors in different genres, including: M. Dion Thompson, former Baltimore Sun reporter and author of the critically-acclaimed historical novel Walk Like A Natural Man; Lalita Noronha, author of the short story collection, Where Monsoons Cry; and Michael Datcher, Today Show Book Club Awardee and editor of Tough Love: The Life and Death of Tupac Shakur . Kwame Alexander has served as a judge for several local and national literary awards, including the Georgia Writer's Awards, and the Washington, DC Parkmont Poetry Awards. Among his many board appointments are The CityLit Project, Baltimore's Artscape Festival, and the Hippodrome Arts & Education Committee. Alexander is a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he studied under renowned poet Nikki Giovanni.

He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife and daughter, where he hosts a weekly radio program, Word of Mouth, and serves as poet-in-the-schools for Crossland High School/Prince George's County Schools. When not working on several new and exciting book and TV/film projects, he enjoys reading, writing, and a good game of chess.

GREAT MIDWEST BOOK FEST on July 25, 2009

Hello.

Urban Reviews is holding its first annual GREAT MIDWEST BOOK FEST on July 25, 2009 from 1- 4pm in Milwaukee, WI. There will be a total of 8 to 10 African American authors selling their books in a book fair setting. This event will be free and open to the public. Our Main Attraction authors include Earl Sewell, Tina Brooks McKinney, Bettye Griffin, and Michelle Larks. The other 4 to 6 authors will be local authors that have yet to be determined.

There are a few different ways that you can be a sponsor for this event. They include one or more of the following:

1) PLATINUM SPONSOR: Advertising in the Souvenir Ad Journal - $25 Text Ad, $35 Quarter Page, $50 Half Page, $100 Full Page Ad - We will forward a copy of the 8.5" x 5.5" souvenir ad journal for your records and we will also include you on the SPECIAL THANKS page in our souvenir ad journal as a Platinum Sponsor. We accept Paypal (preferred payment mode), check, or money order for payment. (Limited spots available, so send an email to the address below and inquire today. All ads must be 300dpi in quality. We ask that you provide the ad graphic to be used, but we will be more than happy to assist in creating the ad as time permits)

2) GOLD SPONSOR: Books for FREE SWAG Bag - 100 SWAG Bags will be given to those who make a book purchase at the event. Donate 5+ books for the SWAG bag and we will include you on the SPECIAL THANKS page in our souvenir ad journal as a Gold Sponsor.

3) SILVER SPONSOR: Monetary donation of $5-$20 to the event costs, donation of any promotional items (pens, bookmarks, t-shirts, postcards, etc), or 1-4 books for the SWAG Bags and we will include you on the SPECIAL THANKS page in our souvenir ad journal as a Silver Sponsor.

If you are sending books or promotional items, please email us back with what you plan to send, and we will put you down as a tentative event sponsor and forward our mailing address to send the materials. Once we receive the materials, we will confirm that it has arrived and secure your name as a definitive sponsor.

EDC Creations Joins Losing 4 Literacy

National Campaign to Promote Health and Literacy

Maryland’s Ella D Curry of EDC Creations Media Group (http://www.edc-creations.com/) has partnered up with The Risqué Café to promote health and literacy through a fundraising campaign called “Losing 4 Literacy” which is a 12-week weight-loss/wellness challenge with the purpose of helping to fund a foundation which will empower inner-city and troubled youths to express themselves in a positive manner, bring awareness to the literary community and promote healthier lifestyles.
The challenge will be hosted and facilitated by The Risqué Café - a website and marketing company created to connect authors and readers (http://www.therisquecafe.com/). At the conclusion of the 12-week challenge, the top (3) three teams with the highest percentage of weight loss will be rewarded a cash prize, products, books, and more!

The challenge is designed to encourage and promote literacy, as well as help participants develop healthier lifestyles so they can live longer. Lifestyle/Wellness coaches from “Healthy You 4 Life” will provide support, meal plans, and wellness consulting throughout the teams 12 week journey to a healthy you.

Over 12 weeks, the teams will learn healthy eating habits, and how to make optimum food choices for life. Studies show the camaraderie, encouragement, accountability and motivation of group weight loss competitions lead to greater success. Statistics show weight is a key predictor of a number of chronic, life-threatening diseases such as diabetes. Not only can healthy weight loss turn those disorders around, but it leads to increased energy and productivity, and higher self esteem.

Ella D Curry of EDC Creations Media Group says, "Losing4Literacy is a positive cause that will bring more awareness to education and healthcare plus bring communities together on a local as well as national level. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach back and give to others and possibly touch the lives of youths who have taken or are on the wrong path.”

Registration begins March 25, 2009 and ends May 17, 2009. Adults and youth are welcomed to participate. This is for a great cause.
