Intimate Conversation Interview with author and entrepreneur Nyema
Nyema was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. In early 2007, she hit the streets with her freshman novel Love & Consequences published under Dreams 2 Write Publishing, which she is the founder and owner of. Then in Dec. 2007 she hit again making her presence known with her sophomore novel Deceitful Obsession, also published under her imprint.
Getting her feet wet with the first two was a struggle, but with the help of a few fellow authors, she never let down. Loving to capture the attention of all readers, she felt it was time to shake things up a bit. While continuing to work on several other projects, including anthologies and script writing, she has jumped from contemporary to street in the blink of an eye making sure to secure a spot in Urban Literature.
Versatility is the key to success in her mind. Her third novel, Back Stabbers, presented by bestselling author JM Benjamin, will be sure to keep you on the edge of your seat at all times. Nyema currently resides in the Maryland area where she is working on the sequel to Back Stabbers and an upcoming novel titled Breakin' All The Rules. Ella: Hello Nyema, tell us about your passion for writing.
I had a Passion for writing ever since I can remember. The more poems and short stories I wrote as a child, the more creative I became at my craft. There was nothing I loved more than picking up a pen and making my dreams come to life on paper. I feel like I live through my characters when I write. It's so therapeutic for me. It calms me and keeps me motivated, happy and feeling free.
In my latest novel Back Stabbers I offer my readers a story they can relate to. If I had to guess, I would say at least eighty percent of the world's population has felt or may have been betrayed at one point or another in life. This particular story follows the struggle of a young woman named Azia. She isn't your typical money hungry chick. With no family or help from the system to help further her education, she decides to use her god-given assets to pay her way through college. Everything went smooth until she fell for one of Philly's most deadliest hustlers.
Allowing greed to over power her common sense, Azia finds herself caught up in a treacherous game that only few live long enough to talk about. Everywhere she turns there's one back stabber after the other trying to claw their way to the top. Old beefs become new ones and friends become foes as tension fills the air.
Ella: Nyema, finish this sentence: I am Powerful because...
I feel Powerful because of my faith in God. I have never been afraid to ask him for help in time of need, nor have I ever been afraid to (cry) asking for forgiveness or thanking him for all that I have been blessed with thus far. I'm a true believer in the saying "He may not come when you want him to, but He's always right on time". I feel Blessed!
Ella: Where are you from? How did you start your writing journey?
I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA but I currently reside in the Maryland area with my husband and 2 year old son. I always loved reading as a child. My mom paid close attention to that. She went out and bought a collection of books, Alice Walker's greatest hits being one of them. She told me I had to read at least one book per week or I couldn't go outside on the weekend. I was upset back then, but now I understand why she did it. It has made me grow into the writer I am today. After reading and writing poetry for so long, I knew I too had some stories to tell. God has blessed me with a wonderful gift and I plan to use it to the best of my ability.
Ella: Who are your two main characters and what do you like most about them?
Azia is one of my favorites. I love her character because of her spunk and ability to take charge. Although she has made some bad choices through the story, she was still a good girl caught up in a cross fire. Money can sure make a person lose focus. Mike is another favorite of mine. He's the head man in charge in my eyes. He's quiet and layed back, but at the same time he doesn't need to say much or anything at all for the ones around him to know he means Business. Even with the Power Rashaud held, he too secretly wished he could be I Mike's shoes.
Ella: What makes your book stand out and would entice a reader pick it up?
I have grasped the respect and support of many readers through my previous titles "Love & Consequences" and my second "Deceitful Obsession". I get flooded with emails from supporters anticipating the release of more. But to answer your question what makes Back Stabbers stand out is the Cover and Title alone. It draws new readers in that may not have heard of me or any of my works in the past. After reading the synopsis on the back of the cover, that pulls them in even more because the storyline reads drama and majority readers enjoy that. I get a lot of avid readers that say they like to be able to feel like they're in a world with the characters. That's what I give you when I write. Although I put a twist on my style switching from Contemporary to Street, I pulled through with a bang with this latest one. It's like a brief spill on what goes on in the streets today because trust me these streets have mercy on no one.
Ella: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book?
I want the readers to gain the knowledge of what back stabbers are all about. They smile in your face. It can be a sister, brother, cousin, friend, enemy, aunt, uncle, even a mother or father. A back stabber does not discriminate. They may even be hard to spot. At the end of the day you must learn how to handle them. Feed them with a long handled spoon.
Ella: What is the most surprising thing you have learned in creating books?
I have learned that being a writer and possessing the skill is not as easy as some make it out to be. Sitting at a computer and mapping out a whole story is a big task. It takes Time, Conscious Effort, Patience and Strength to stay focused and not give up until the end. In order to survive in the book game you have to know what it takes. Maybe the most surprising thing has been meeting and greeting folks out there in the (field). They're tough and they're not going to waste their time talking to someone that doesn't know what's going on. But, I was told by another bestselling author to sell and promote thy work shamelessly. I must say he couldn't have told me anything better.
