Intimate Conversation with Patricia Anne Phillips

Patricia Anne Phillips resides in Los Angeles, California. She has written nine romance novels. Her first novel Something In Common was self-published. June In Winter, her second novel was published at Kensington Publishing and was featured in Romance Times Magazine as Best Multicultural and best first time Multicultural Romance. As an enthusiastic fan of the romance genre, Patricia was inspired to begin writing her own romance novels.

BPM: When did you get your first inkling to write, and how did you advance the call for writing?
When I started reading novels I think I always knew that one day I would write a book of my own. It was just time for me to stop procrastinating and do something about it. Now, I wish I would have years earlier.

BPM: Introduce us to your book and the primary topics. What makes each one special?
Baldwin Hills Housewives is a story of five women. There is a vast audience that watches OC Housewives, Beverly Hills Housewives, and Atlanta Housewives but there are no housewives in Los Angeles. So I thought it was a good time to write my book.

As for Falling In The Deep, it’s a story that will give readers the real meaning of their marriage vows, a sense of commitment and responsibility. It deals with one woman's journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

BPM: What are you most thankful for right now, today?
I am most thankful that every day when I wake up I can open my eyes and get out of bed.

BPM: Ultimately, what do you want readers to gain from your book? When someone finishes your book, what would you like for them to do?
I want readers to be entertained by reading Baldwin Hills Housewives, and for Falling In The Deep, get more knowledge of Multiple Sclerosis and be deeper commented to their marriage and spouse.

BPM: What are your goals as a writer? Do you set out to educate? Entertain? Illuminate? Inspire?
I write novels that will inspire women so they can understand that whatever problems or unhappiness in their lives, life can be better tomorrow than it is today.

Falling In The Deep
by Patricia Anne Phillips

Falling In The Deep is a novel that gives the true meaning of rivalry, betrayal and deception, and no meaning at all for marriage vows, such as . . . through sickness and health.

Falling In The Deep is a gripping, hurtful story of Sabrina Chapman who is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Readers will feel her pain and wonder about the true meaning of their own marriage vows. Also, it will give readers awareness of MS and the symptoms.

The story takes place in Mill Valley, a middle class neighborhood near the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. Sabrina Chapman had the perfect life, a loving husband and two adoring children. She was happy, living the life she always wanted and deeply in love with her husband, or so she thought until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and the essence of life she once taken for granted no longer existed.

Jason Chapman is disappointed with the news of his wife health; it was no longer the life they had planned. Why should he stay in a marriage that he didn’t ask for? After all he wasn’t the one with MS? He wanted to make career moves, and have a healthy, beautiful wife by his side.

In Falling In The Deep, readers will cry, laugh and follow one woman’s life of bravery, as she forges ahead to make a life for her and her two children, and with the help of someone that see’s her as the beautiful, smart woman she always was.  Falling In The Deep can be purchased on Amazon for books and Kindle, also in various stores.

What is Multiple Sclerosis or MS?
Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in loss of muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation (such as numbness). With MS, the nerves of the brain and spinal cord are damaged by one's own immune system.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the condition affects approximately 400,000 Americans and is, with the exception of trauma, the most frequent cause of neurological disability beginning in early to middle adulthood.  Multiple Sclerosis is two to three times as common in females as in males and its occurrence is unusual before adolescence. A person has an increased risk of developing the disease from the teen years to age 50, with the risk gradually declining thereafter.  For more information on MS, go here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/multiple-sclerosis/DS00188

Book Reviews:
“This was the first book I've read by the author, but it won't be my last. Norwood Holland 's characters are very well-crafted and pulled me into their tangled web of dramas straightaway. That is especially true of the series' main character, Drew Smith. I laughingly found myself talking to and yelling at him. That alone speaks to the author's remarkable storytelling and mystery-weaving ability, with his legal background shining through. It has lots of twists and turns, with an emotional and satisfying ending.” - Edwina Putney (Amazon Reviewer)

“I think Mr. Holland is a remarkable story teller, his knowledge of legal proceedings is on point, and he has a way of making you care about unsavory characters. That takes some skill. If you enjoy legal dramas like The Client and Pelican Brief, you'll love this book!” -  Samantha Teal

Minus One (The Drew Smith Series)
Excerpt from Chapter 1

Caught Red-Handed

The officers were dispatched on a possible domestic dispute. They didn’t know what to expect when Mrs. Oliphant met the two at the elevator, one Latino the other African-American, both towering over the blue haired dowager. Nervous and animated, she spoke as rapidly as she stepped, guiding them to the apartment door.

“Are you related?” asked the stocky dark haired Latino.

“No. I'm Carol's next door neighbor. There was a fight and I heard the disturbance,” Mrs. Oliphant sighed and shook her head as though shaking off a secret annoyance. “Mind you, I don't eavesdrop but I couldn't help hearing--you know thin walls and vents carry conversations. This is her apartment.” They stopped in front of the corner apartment at the end of the hall. “I have the key,” she said.

Mrs. Oliphant's tiny trembling liver spotted hand offered it up between the thumb and forefinger. With a nod the Latino urged her to open the door. “Hard to make sense of it all,” she continued her prattle fumbling to get the key in the keyhole, “I could only piece things together. She's so distraught almost hysterical--it had to be something traumatic. I gave her a sedative.” She relaxed with the key finally in.

“Did you go in?” the Latino asked. He reached over her shoulder, turned the knob and pushed the door open.

“No, she told me to call the police.” Mrs. Oliphant followed the two in.

A deathly silence hung in the air of the spacious and well-appointed apartment. The other officer – a tall, black, athletic man – stepped around the sofa with Mrs. Oliphant right behind him. They both nearly tripped over something crumpled on the floor, and when they looked to see what it was, they found a body, lying face down in a pool of blood that trailed to the rear of the apartment.

“Oh dear,” uttered Mrs. Oliphant, when suddenly the distant sound of running water triggered the officers' instinctive defenses. The Latino officer, with hand on his holstered Glock, slowly made his way down the hall to investigate.

The other officer knelt to inspect the body, but his attention was distracted by his partner’s conversation with another male voice.

“Oh dear,” Mrs. Oliphant repeated, as the officer escorted a man to the front of the apartment. “Medhat, where did you come from?” Mrs. Oliphant asked. He was drying his hands with a blood-stained towel. Twice stunned, Mrs. Oliphant tilted her head like a puzzled puppy.

“This dude’s dead,” the black officer announced, after finishing his analysis of the body. On bended knee, he looked up to Medhat and asked, “Who are you?”

November, 1982

“What do you think, Smith?”

Truth of the matter was I didn't want Detective Washington to know what I was thinking. Medhat was looking more like a serial killer, but I knew better. He had a lot of bad qualities, but homicidal he was not. My friend was a lover, not a killer; nevertheless, I had the feeling he was dragging me down a road I didn't care to venture on. I closed the police data file and shoved it back across the desktop.

“I'm not sure what to think, Detective.”

Unit Commander of the Metropolitan Police Homicide Division, Detective Lieutenant Richard Washington, waited patiently while I digested the contents. By granting me access to privileged information he was expecting a trade-off. We were bargaining hungry for the other's perspective and inside information. Hence my unfettered access to what would ordinarily be classified information requiring, at minimum, a FOIA request for sensitive information related to an ongoing police investigation. I was a lead – a source, or informant – and as a friend of the court Detective Washington relied on my attorney status. He gave me some of what I wanted. Now I had to return the favor.

This wasn't the first homicide in which Medhat was a suspect. So how did I end up sitting in a police precinct reviewing a police crime scene report? It started with a phone call from Medhat in the middle of the night.

* * *

Awakened by the ringing phone, I waited for Medhat to answer it. I had just assumed that he was asleep on the pullout sofa in the living room. Since he had moved in, the phone was almost always for him. After five rings, I regrettably figured he wasn’t there, and the ringing was not going to stop.

“Hello.”

“Drew, I need your help. I’m in jail. Come get me.” Medhat.

“In jail?” I sat up. “What happened?”

“They think I killed him, but I didn’t do it.” There was desperation in his voice. “Somebody set me up. I didn't do it. I tell you I didn't do it.

Excerpt: of Life, Love and Family by John Tracy Wilson

of Life, Love and Family
by John Tracy Wilson

Real world insights into our most important relationships.

Aren’t all relationships overrated? Are you frustrated in your relationships with family, friends, love interests and even God? Isn’t the level of grief just too great? Hurt and pain are more likely to be the abundant yield than any lasting happiness or joy. Cynical? Maybe…but it’s an easy opinion to endorse until you’re brought to the realization that life is all about relationships.

In John Tracy Wilson’s new book, he transparently bares his discoveries on building relationships that are life-changing. This book is for everyone who craves the richness that comes from knowing your life has meaning. As John says: “Whether idyllic or defective, relationships are the fabric of life. We are the threads that determine how the pattern of that fabric will take shape.”

He shows us how we can find more joy, happiness and inspirational encouragement, while also voicing a few words of cautionary warnings to heed. He reminds us to once again begin understanding and appreciating what we have. To discover, maybe even for the first time, what we want in our lives, even when others and the world itself, are so negative. If you want to bring more depth and meaning to all of your relationships, you have found the perfect book!

Excerpt from Of Life, Love and Family by John Tracy Wilson

Relationships...they’re overrated – family, friends, love interests, as well as God. The level of grief is just too great. Hurt and pain are far more likely to be the abundant yield than any lasting happiness or joy. Cynical? Maybe – but it’s an easy opinion to endorse, until you’re brought to the realization that life isn’t really about our comfort and bliss. Life is all about relationship.

Can I be an integral piece of the puzzle, a vital part of the master plan?

Does my life even have enough significance to make a difference?
Are relationships really worth it, or is it all fallacy?

Is a relationship with God essential to my happiness?

Does God want to know me on that intimate of a level?

Relationship is what we were created for. There’s more at work here than feeling light and fluffy – having everything laid out nice and neat. Quoting a lyric from one of my songs:

Plans were laid before we were made
We’re not some cosmic brew

There’s more at stake from the ripples we make
Than simply passing through

I haven’t always believed the things I will ask you to consider. Through the years many of my relationships haven’t reflected an image of anything close to perfection. But EVERY relationship, from the one beginning first with our creator God to those that are tangible, holds the purposeful task of being a quintessential layer of who WE will become. Likewise, we also aid in the make-up of who OTHERS may become while we impact and contribute to their foundation, shaping their design as our lives intersect on the way to our completion. Whether idyllic or defective, relationships are the fabric of life. We are the threads that determine how the pattern of that fabric will take shape.

In the coming pages I will be sharing lessons and insights I have grasped about our daily living and time here on earth – both of inspirational encouragement and cautionary warning. These are drawn from my personal experience with situations and circumstances that most of us seem to naturally encounter as we take in and breathe out the elements that form the atmosphere of relationship. Even when all is not perfect and the negative appears to stake it’s entitlement on the reality of our existence, we can still take positive steps to grow from and build meaningful relationships with unending worth, as we find ourselves ever closer to eternity.

Life in Spades by Frances Frost

Life in Spades by Frances Frost

Life in Spades
explores the lives, loves and friendships among four contemporary African-American women.
Set in Washington, D.C. and its surrounding suburbs, Life in Spades is about the friendship of four thirty-something African-American women who regularly get together to play the card game Spades. Away from the card table, Gina, Sherry, Laura, and Cookie face challenges in inter-racial dating, impending motherhood, finding love, and recovering from an attack.

Gina, an admittedly unathletic runner, is training for a marathon with her white boyfriend in an effort to change her mother’s mind about interracial dating.
Sherry divorced her husband after he was convicted and imprisoned on charges of financial wrong-doing and is now enjoying her new single life. While debating her own possibility of motherhood, she is forced to help out her pregnant niece. Laura, a professional escort, plays by a strict set of self-imposed rules in order to maintain her one-woman business.
Cookie, a cupcake baker, wrestles with memories of her late fiancée and an obvious attraction to the delivery man who comes by every day. An attack in her bakery scares all of the women and they are each inspired to figure out the next best hand to play.

With humor and insight, Frances Frost weaves a story of these women as they face their personal insecurities, negotiate love, strengthen their friendship, and define happiness.

Lemonade: Inspired by Actual Events
by Bernard L. Dillard

Got lemons? Read Lemonade!

After booking his role on The Wire, Bernard Dillard had no idea of the types of doors that would open up for him in the future. Perhaps the most rewarding opportunity he was afforded was the writing of his own memoir.

Nominated for a 2013 Global eBook Award, Lemonade chronicles the gripping story of Bernard Dillard's tenuous journey to manhood. The memoir highlights several challenges that he faces and reverberates as a coming-of-age story, which details his persistence, faith, and triumph as he journeys through the maze of life. Exposed to the goods, the bads, and the uglies of Dillard's world, readers can't help but sympathize with, cheer for, and laugh out loud at a man, who is trying his best to find the most stable path that leads from boy to man.

Written like a novel and presented in bite-sized chapters, Lemonade is indeed a page-turner. Through vulnerability and candor, Dillard exposes wounds that he has held close to the vest over the years. Using modern-day, pop-culture references and side-splitting humor, he confronts serious issues that find themselves at the forefront of national discussion, especially absentee fatherhood, drug addiction, and sexual abuse.

Lemonade also gives women a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of men like Dillard and sheds light on why some men struggle often when it comes to investing in relationships and making them work.

In a nutshell, Dillard stands in life's kitchen, gathers his ingredients, and shows readers what to make when all there seems to be is a basket full of lemons. Hear what others are saying about Lemonade: https://vimeo.com/63838210

Book Excerpt: Lemonade: Inspired by Actual Events

"I grabbed a magazine during the wait and also to keep from having to look at people who walked by my general area. It felt like every eye in that wing of the building was on me. They knew I didn't work there so I had to be visiting for the other reason. Indeed, I was making more out of it because whenever I glanced up, people were minding their own business, not even realizing I was there. What I was feeling was my own sense of paranoia. I was reading some issue in Ebony about how Mo'Nique was on the come-up. I was so enrapt in the article that I hadn't realized that Judge was standing at the door, holding it open, trying to get my attention. 'Bernard!'"

"Hey, Judge. You are Judge, right?"

"Yeah, come on in. That must be a good article, man. I called you about three times."

"Maybe while I'm here, I probably need to get my hearing checked too. It might be wax." We both laughed.

I sat down and just observed my surroundings. To the left were a race track, some Lego pieces, building blocks, and other toys. Sadly, his clientele obviously included little boys who hadn't managed to escape this harsh reality. I started to tear up a little because of this, but thank goodness Judge was one of those whose job it was to intervene and help them gain some sense of normalcy back."

Intimate Conversation with Rekaya Gibson

Mama Don't Like Ugly by Rekaya Gibson

Mama Don't Like Ugly
takes readers on a journey of Dana Calhoun's life growing up in Nautica, Louisiana. Her mama finds her dark skin repulsive, so she abuses and neglects her. Also, she constantly compares Dana to her light-skinned sister. Regardless of Dana's unconditional love for her mama, she still encounters a cycle of torment. Will mama finally realize that Dana is a beautiful person in spite of her dark skin or will she continue to spew those hateful words, "Mama don't like ugly?"

Intimate Conversation with Rekaya Gibson

Rekaya Gibson is the author of three fiction titles: “Mama Don’t Like Ugly,” “The Food Temptress,” and the sequel, “The Food Enchantress,” She launched her freelance writing career in 2005 by writing for several magazines. She reviews cookbooks for Cuisine Noir, a foodies and wine magazine for African Americans, as well as writes articles for the Hampton Food Examiner. In addition, she offers grant writing services/consultations and grant writing workshops. She resides in Virginia.

BPM: Introduce us to your book and the main characters.
“Mama Don’t Like Ugly” is a fiction story about Dana, a dark-skinned girl, growing up in a household with a mama who dislikes her because of her skin color. Her mama not only abuses and neglects her, but she constantly compares her to her light-skinned sister. In spite of her situation, she still loves her mama unconditionally.

BPM: Who were your favorites? Are your characters from the portrayal of real people?
My favorite character is Dana. I want readers to connect with her because she is intelligent and resilient. In spite of her situation, she still loves her mama unconditionally. Most importantly, her beauty radiates from the inside and she does not let her imperfections dictate her destiny.

BPM: What situation or revelation prompted you to write your book?
I am fascinated that people’s behaviors and/or perceptions about skin color are passed from generation to generation - consciously and subconsciously. I have seen this in so many families. It has made some stronger while it has destroyed others.

BPM: What do you think makes your book different from others on the same subject?
It has a good balance of drama, humor and suspense. Also, it will resuscitate nonfiction discussions about beauty and skin color. I am hoping that families will stop being in denial about their prejudices toward other family members.

BPM: Share with us your latest news, awards or upcoming book releases.
My next release is “My Mama’s Sweet Potato Pie” a bi-lingual coloring book for ages three and up. The 20-page story offers 10 illustrations with its 10 Spanish translations – making it a delicious treat. Grab your crayons and discover how mama makes a sweet potato pie for her son.

BPM: How can our readers reach you online? Share with us your online contact info.

Social worker Sienna St. James is a woman with a complicated past and an alarming Tuesday morning. In one single day, every advance Sienna has made in getting over her long lost globe-trotting husband unravels in unexplainable fashion. From a mysterious package that hails from another continent to a new teen client who claims to have a missing sister, Sienna finds herself in the middle of a city-wide scandal, all while sorting out the painful details of her personal life. At center are two suspicious foster parents, a mega-church ministry leader, and Sienna's own fragile emotions over a man who changed the direction of her life. I
t's a test of her professional and moral will as Sienna seeks closure from a love she never understood and answers about whether a little girl named Hope ever existed. And if she did, where is she now? In this first installment of the suspenseful Sienna St. James Series, finding hope in the midst of questions and chaos becomes essential when life takes an unexpected turn.

About Without Faith:
She’s moved forward, but has she really moved ahead? Social worker Sienna St. James is no stranger to setbacks. As far as she is concerned, her estranged husband set her back and off course over a decade ago. Now, she has reclaimed her sense of hope and purpose, set up a new therapy practice, bought a new home, and has finally moved on. Maybe.
When a wealthy, secretive new couple she’s counseling pulls her into their very real life-and-death drama, and her long-lost husband’s whereabouts can no longer be ignored, Sienna realizes the truth about what has kept her emotionally frozen and fragile—it’s fear. Ready or not, she has frightening challenges to overcome: a kidnapping, a teenage son who’s gone AWOL, a tired-of-waiting potential new beau, and a journalist who’s made it clear that he’s interested in getting more from her than the breaking news the twists in her life are offering. Torn by professional and personal struggles that have now become a full blown war, Sienna must come face-to-face with her deepest fears—and survive them—before it’s too late.

Excerpt from LOSING HOPE

“So Dayonna has been here a few days now. Tell me how things are going for each of you.” I made certain to share eye contact with all three to ensure nobody felt excluded from my invitation to talk. In doing so, I did not miss the brief moments of silence that suddenly took over the room. The Monroes looked at each other again, though I could not read what emotion passed between them.

“Everything has been quite perfect, to be honest with you.” The gap in Mrs. Monroe’s upper teeth showed through her smile.

But her bottom lip was quivering.

“Yes, indeed.” Mr. Monroe’s voice sounded louder than necessary. “No problems here.”

I looked over at Dayonna, who stared back at me with a blank look on her face. “Your thoughts on how things are going so far?” I inquired.

She said nothing, only continued to stare at me with that blank, unreadable look.

Teenagers were some of the most difficult people to navigate, even without a mental health diagnosis.

“Well . . . ?” I shuffled through some papers in my lap, trying to figure out what words would break the apparent agreed-upon code of silence suddenly permeating the living room. Despite all my training, at times I still felt like a novice. “So . . . ,” I said, beginning again, “everything is going well?”

“All is well.” Mr. Monroe gave a plastic grin.

Mrs. Monroe nodded her head in agreement, a crazed smile on her face.

“Perhaps I can talk to each of you individually.” I glanced over at Dayonna, whose lips were pursed, as if she was about to finally speak.

“Ms. St. James, we appreciate you stopping by today, but as my husband said, we need to start getting ready for Bible study. Perhaps we can finish this visit another time?” Mrs. Monroe’s smile did not waver.

There was nothing else for me to say or do. I gathered my things and casually headed for the door. “Okay. I’ll come back on Thursday, same time, okay?”

“That’s perfect.” Mrs. Monroe clasped her hands together. “We’ll have more time to talk then.”

As I stepped out onto the porch, Dayonna was suddenly next to me, walking down the steps with me. She walked so close to me that my attaché was pinned between us.

“Wh-where are you going, little Miss Diamond?” Mr. Monroe called after us.

“Just walking Ms. St. James to her car,” she shouted back. I stayed quiet, feeling like I needed to let things go wherever they were heading without my interruption. I could see Mrs. Monroe struggling to get out of her house slippers and put on her shoes. She wanted to come outside with us.

But I was already at my car.

“Is everything really okay, Dayonna?” I gave her my warmest smile. She was quiet as I opened the driver’s side door and threw my attaché over to the passenger seat. She shrugged her shoulders and turned as if to leave but then was suddenly next to my ear.

“You gotta get me out of here.” Dayonna’s voice was a sharp whisper.

“Why? What’s wrong?” I was pleased to finally be getting somewhere.

Dayonna frowned and looked me straight in my eyes. “They’re going to kill me.”

Excerpt from WITHOUT FAITH

“Make a U-turn. Now turn left at the light.”

His face was hidden from me, but his voice served as a menacing GPS, weaving me in and out of the suburbs and finally into the narrow side streets of East Baltimore. Any lessons I’d had about self-defense, whether to scream, whether to fight back or keep still, had gone out of the window the minute I’d felt that cold metal on my neck.

“Make this turn here. Okay, right.” His voice sounded youthful, but the gun told me he was not playing games.

After almost an hour had gone by, I found courage to speak.

“I’m going to run out of gas.”

“Shut up and turn left at the stop sign.”

We drove for ten minutes more as I wondered if these were my last moments. I looked at the people, buildings, homes, and cars around me anew, trying to savor small details that I probably would not have even noticed any other time. I counted trees that grew out of small patches of dirt in the concrete; noticed the handwritten store signs on some corner stores; listened to the loud laugh of a woman with a short, scruffy ponytail sitting on a stoop with a group of giggling toddlers; imagined Roman never knowing what ever happened to either his mother or his father; Leon never knowing that my heart wanted to love him; Laz wondering what ever happened to his beautiful silver BMW.

“Right here. Stop. The third house down,” the man’s voice interrupted. “Get out. Go straight to the door.”

We’d stopped in front of a narrow row house near East Biddle Street, I think. My mind had gone numb and my memory evaded me. All I could see were crumbling brick steps, a dingy front door, and a single potted plant on the cement porch. He used a key to open the door and used the gun to beckon me inside. My eyes adjusted to the dark interior of a living room in shambles.

“David? Is that you?” A large woman in a wheelchair sat in the darkness, an oxygen tube running from her nose, her hair done in two sloppy, graying cornrows, her eyes staring off into space. She appeared to be blind. “You picked up my medicine?”

“Yes, Grandma. I’ll get your water in just a minute.” He walked behind me, pushing me forward, the tip of the gun now at the center of my spine. His breaths were as labored as mine.

Both of us were scared.

He seemed to be pushing me toward the kitchen, toward a closed door that sat right beyond a large pantry.

“David,” the woman’s shrill voice called out again, “someone with you?”

“It’s okay, Grandma. I’m getting your water.”

He reached from behind me and opened the door, and I saw that his hands looked massive, powerful. “Go down there,” he whispered, nudging me down unfinished wooden steps. I took the first one and the door clicked closed behind me. I heard him lock it.

“I’m sorry I had to do it like this.” A voice from the crawl space behind the stairs whipped my head around. There in the shadows of the stairwell sat....

Excerpt from Raging Blue Chapter 1

Blue

He slapped her so hard that her sight blurred for a minute. After a few moments, Blue Holiday focused on her husband’s towering frame as it loomed over her. Jaylin Mack’s rich, dark complexion appeared even darker. His French-cuffed shirt was half buttoned and sloped lazily off his shoulders. His slacks hung low around his slim waist, and his belt was only partially looped.

“See what you made me do!” he screamed, applying pressure to his temples with the fingers of both hands.

Shocked into silence, Blue stood still, absorbing the verbal assault. Tears had yet to find their way down her cheek. In the five years they’d been married, Jay had never put his hands on her. However, she’d grown accustomed to his crassness, initially intrigued by what she'd perceived as confidence.

The slap still sent a pulsing sensation across her cheek. The tears finally appeared, welling up in her eyes. Her unresponsiveness fell away in clumps. She stared at his moving lips and began to hear him clearly. His words carried as much sting as the slap.

“See what you made me do,” he repeated. The liquor made his tongue lazy, causing each word to slide into the next.

Blue looked into his wild eyes and blinked. Tears trickled down her cheeks, making dark circles wherever they landed on her champagne-colored cocktail dress. She swatted them away. Her eyes were fixed on Jay. He was obviously hopped up on something more potent than scotch.

Blue’s eyes darted around the living room of their lavish penthouse, taking in the massive floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the dazzling Manhattan skyline. A pair of handsome floor vases sprouting dried flora caused Blue to pause, but they were too heavy to pick up. Her sight then rested on his set of prized golf clubs. Blue took slow steps in the direction of the irons as Jay continued rambling.

“Don’t walk away from me. You’re supposed to be my wife! A woman! Act. Like. One!” he yelled as Blue continued to walk towards the clubs. “I saw you whispering to that man,” he said, his voice growing louder. “I saw him kiss you!”

Blue shook her head. Jay’s words lashed at her back. She swatted at them in her mind and imagined the cold steel of the golf club in her hands—as protection. With a few short steps, Jay was right behind her just as she reached for a club. He grabbed at her, pulling her from the pit of her thoughts.

Sinful Liaisons by JC Gardner

Are you ready to take a ride on the wild side?
Smooth talking pretty boy David Jarconni, son of a millionaire businessman and a doting mother, is overprivileged and doesn’t appreciate anything. Destined to run the family business, he’d rather run the streets than be in a business suite.

His younger sister, Carol, is an overachiever who has already staked her claim to the company fortune. She undermines David at every turn.  His new lady love, super model Danielle, provides him with a safe haven to escape the reality of his jacked up situation. And an old nemesis comes out of the woodwork for sweet revenge!

Sinful Liaisons is bound to keep readers up into the wee hours of the night with its complex relationships and jaw dropping plot twists. It lives up to the fiery chili pepper on the cover…it’s smokin’ hot!

Book Excerpt: Sinful Liaisons

David had been sitting in his cell for two hours coming down from his high, going over the events that led to his current predicament. He was supposed to call Danielle after that horrid dinner, but he was so wound up after visiting his parents’ house, that was the last thing on his mind. Sitting at the dinner table with them was hell. All

Carol could talk about was work and how rewarding it was, and Lewis would just grunt and mumble about how he should give it a try. Then Carol retired to her room to work on her schedule for the next day and Lewis went into his study for some quiet time.

David knew that meant some quiet time with his friend Jack…Daniels.

Nicole had to clean away the dishes, thanks to Susie quitting. David went to his father and asked him for some money, hoping he was so wasted that he wouldn't have the guts to argue with him. But that was a huge mistake that started World War Three. Lewis was so upset, that Nicole had to calm him down. Thanks to her, Lewis gave him some money – no, Lewis threw him some money like he was a panhandler on the street. Of course, this would have made anyone else leave the money on the floor out of pride, but not him. He bent over and picked it up, cursing under his breath all the way. He had to get out of there.

His mother walked him to the door trying to talk some sense into him. He kissed her on the cheek and left the house. He loved his mother dearly, but the rest of them could take a hike. He knew that his father hated him. He could see it in his eyes. And Carol, the little witch, was no sister of his, always undermining him.

He practically ran from the house. He had to find a way to make some cash because getting it from his family was becoming increasingly difficult, not to mention painful.

He drove straight to a bar and drank himself into oblivion.

Excerpt: The Eleventh Commandment by Lutishia Lovely

The Eleventh Commandment
by Lutishia Lovely

The members of Kingdom Citizens Christian Center believe in sharing the spirit of love and generosity with others. Even so, they can't seem to follow the ten commandments, a fact that suggests it just might be time to add rule number eleven. . .

While Frieda Moore has not found her way to the Good Word—she has charted a path to a really good, upscale life. Still, she's not about to let her prominent surgeon husband and baby son get in the way of her good time. The sizzling blessings she's getting from her primed-and-ready 25-year-old lover are too divine to resist. . .until one too many secrets threaten to ruin this bad girl's heaven on earth. . .

Frieda's more sensible cousin, Hope Taylor, was sure she and her spouse, Cy, were solid-in-the-spirit. But now a long-lost love is requesting an act of Christian charity that for Cy could be a second chance at temptation. And when Hope's best friend, Stacy, must decide if a money-making scheme with her ex will fix her rocky marriage, the consequences will have the saved, maybe-saved, and the hardly-saved begging for deliverance . . .

The Eleventh Commandment – An Excerpt

Frieda clicked the locks on her shiny new Lexus LX and slid inside. Ever since she’d purchased the pearl wonder with light tan seats, she’d given to wearing outfits and/or accessories in the same color, often finished off with Louboutin pumps and pearl-colored Gucci shades. Frieda’s picture could have appeared next to the word materialistic, but she didn’t mind. She’d learned how in LA image was everything. She had faked it until she made it and snagged a doctor in the process. Thinking of Gabriel, the hardworking husband and sponsor of the designer duds she wore, caused a tiny tinge of guilt as she turned down Martin Luther King Boulevard and headed toward where she used to live. Passing row after row of modest apartments much like the one she’d rented upon arrival from Kansas City, she reflected on her journey from then till now, and how far she’d come in less than five years. When she’d left the Midwest and a drug-slinging boyfriend to join her cousin and best friend, Hope Taylor, in the City of Angels, all she’d hoped for was a good time.
And now here she was a wife and mother, living in a tony Westside neighborhood amid five-thousand square feet of luxury, a bank account courtesy of her husband that never boasted less than five figures, credit cards with no limits, a chef, a maid, and a nanny/housekeeper. Sometimes she had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. And sometimes she had to do what she was doing now . . . .go slumming for something that money couldn’t buy--a thick piece of sausage.

“Get in here, girl,” a tall brothah said as he opened his apartment door. His island accent was as sexy as his long thick locks, his ebony skin, his straight white teeth, and his washboard abs. “You know me don’t like to wait for ya.”

Two hours later a totally satiated and satisfied Frieda left the hood and headed back toward the Westside, and her appointment at the spa…Her phone rang and as she looked at the dash, she again felt a twinge of guilt. The last thing in the world she ever thought would happen was that she’d go soft. The old Frieda wouldn’t have given two hoots about what anybody else thought or felt. Undoubtedly her cousin would attribute it to the Holy Spirit that Hope swore never left Frieda’s side. I hope that Brothah took a break just now. Otherwise He got an eyeful! Frieda thought it was less likely divine intervention and more probably motherhood that had unearthed the heart she’d buried during her teenage years, fending for herself on Prospect Avenue, perhaps dug up by the three-year-old who had both his parents wrapped around his finger. Or maybe it’s you, she thought, reaching to connect the call. She could honestly say she loved the somewhat stodgy, somewhat geeky doctor whose work was his passion. Even though he bored her to tears.

“Hello.” Frieda turned down the sounds blasting from her speakers as she spoke.

“Where are you?” Gabriel Livingston’s voice was just short of curt. “I’ve called you three times.”

“I’ve been out running errands,” she said.

“Cordella said you’ve been gone for hours.”

That nosy housekeeper needs to mind her own business! Frieda made a mental note to speak to her at the next opportunity. Sistah-girl wouldn’t get fired as long as her tenderoni son was handling that pipe like he did, but his mama was definitely going to have to put her mouth on lock. “After my workout I went to get my weekly massage, then went shopping”—screwing but hey, they both have eight letters and start with an S—“so yeah, I guess I’ve been gone for a while.”

“You can’t keep doing this, Frieda. Spending your afternoons gallivanting while Cordella watches our child. In the two years that she’s worked for us, I’m beginning to think Gabe considers the nanny his mom .”

“Did you call to make me feel bad about taking care of myself?”

Gabriel’s exasperated huff came through the phone. “I called to tell you about a dinner engagement tonight with a prominent couple from DC. An unexpected change of plans has them here for the evening, time enough to make an impression that will hopefully result in a large donation for the new oncology ward.” He told her the name of the restaurant. “Reservations are at eight.”

“Looks like it’s a good thing I’m on my way to the spa,” Frieda purred. “So I can look good and help impress your guests.”

By the time the call ended, Frieda knew that she’d flipped the frown that had undoubtedly marked Gabriel’s face when the call began. She turned up the music again as she thought about how opposite she was from Gabriel in so many ways, and how her vibrant personality was what had drawn him to her like a hummingbird to sugar water. He was often exasperated with her, but a witty quip, flirty phrase, or naughty innuendo could usually brighten his mood. He’s so easy to manipulate. And when it came to fathers, there were none better. That heart that Frieda liked to ignore constricted a bit. She really did love Gabriel. He’d do anything for her, and even more for his namesake, the namesake that every day was looking less and less like the good doctor and more and more like one of the men Frieda used to know.

The Other Side of Divine (Blessed Trinity Series)

Prologue

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. --Ephesians 6:17

When I tell you how beautiful, you’re not going to believe just how much so. In fact, beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe it or give it justice.

I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I’m getting ahead of myself here. I hate when someone starts in the middle of a conversation as though you’ve taken part in what was apparently going on in their heads before they began to speak and you have no earthly idea what they’re jabbering on and on about.

To those who don’t know me, my name is Esther Crowe. Those who know and love me best call me Esther, Aunt Esther, or Miss Crowe. A few folks even call me Zion from my days when I had a dance group called the Daughters of Zion many forgotten years ago. The miss part of Miss Crowe is actually a miss statement. There I go again: my attempt at a little humor and playing on words. I love words. For anyone who may have missed it, I was playing on the word misstatement.

I was born Esther Morgan, no middle name. I married into the last name of Crowe. My husband died young (much too young) early into our marriage, from complications of an illness called lupus, to be exact. I don’t like talking much about it. Suffice it to say: I never remarried; I never got around to finding anyone special enough to fill his space.

Then there was that terrible automobile accident that pretty near claimed my life here on earth. I was spared, although barely. For ten years, it was as if I didn’t really exist. But then my nephew, Dr. Zachary Wayne Morgan, stepped into that Chicago nursing facility, bringing with him someone near and dear to my heart: my dear, sweet Gabrielle Mercedes Booker all the way from Birmingham, Alabama and all grown up now.

Gabrielle dropped the last name of Booker and goes by Gabrielle Mercedes. That poor child has indeed lived a hard life. That wretched woman who was given charge over the almost four-year-old at the time was actually the cause of Gabrielle (eight years old when I first met her) and I becoming acquainted. I was out in the community on a summer jog and Aunt Cee-Cee (Mrs. Cecelia Murphy) was out there treating that sweet child like she thought her name was Cinderella (before the glass slippers). I laugh sometimes because Gabrielle has told me on more than one occasion that I was like her very own fairy godmother.

I suppose it’s true what some folks say: What Satan meant for bad, God will use it for good.

I figured out a way to get that precious little girl some joy into her life while she endured being treated even worse than a redheaded stepchild. At least I’d like to believe I brought some good into that child’s life. But Gabrielle could dance, oh my goodness, she could dance! The first time my eyes fell on her running around picking up after those four other children like she was their hired help, I saw the greatness in her. I often described her movements as like the seeds on the feathers of dandelions being carried in the wind: Graceful with a capital G. I saw the greatness in her future.

Gabrielle’s aunt Cee-Cee tried to say I believed Gabrielle was the child I never had. She even said jokingly (or so she claimed after she didn’t get the response she’d apparently hoped for) that I could have Gabrielle outright, for the right price, of course. If I could have gotten Gabrielle without the insult of seeming to buy her, I would have taken that child in a heartbeat, in a heartbeat. After I learned how badly Aunt Cee-Cee had done Gabrielle after my automobile accident—taking the money I’d paid for Gabrielle to attend Juilliard, then throwing her out on the streets with nowhere to go . . .

I don’t even like thinking about that. Why couldn’t I have been here? I wanted so much to see the look on her face when she received the information about Juilliard. But to think: That wretched woman took that money, stole it is what she did. . . . Well, needless to say, Cecelia Murphy’s day of reckoning is coming. And you can believe that. Those that live by the sword shall die by the sword.

Historical Fiction Uses Genealogy to Trace African American and Native
American Connections. Geared Toward Readers Ages 8 and Up
Learn About America’s Forgotten African-American and Native American Patriots

There were anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 soldiers of African and Native American descent who served under
General George Washington in the Continental Forces. Fighting for a country under which they had no legal rights was not an easy road to travel. The stunning new picture book Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War: Part 1 is fiction, as told by a family historian to his greatgrandson about their family’s service as African-Americans during the Revolutionary War. Readers ages 8 and older will be fascinated as they read about a nearly forgotten chapter in American history.

Genealogy is a hot topic. We would all love to know our family history, but it’s not always possible. Sometimes we must depend on oral history passed down through the generations, and many times it fosters questions. Some African American families may have Native American connections. This fascinating historical fiction picture book serves as an example of how such connections and disconnections can be made.

The main characters, Jeremy and his great-grandfather, were in the author’s first book, Patriots of African Descent in the Revolutionary War: Part 1.   This second book, More than One Ancestry: Part 2, fills in more of the blanks of where we come from and who we are.  The story is geared for readers ages 8 and older. It was written to inspire research into our family ties and to foster interest in participating in family reunions. What could be more important?

This historical fiction picture book, More than One Ancestry: Part 2, serves as an example of how such connections and disconnections were made. This informative book was written to inspire research into family ties and to foster interest in family reunions for readers ages 8 and older.
